Apply to Become a Driving Instructor

Before commencing training as a driving instructor, you must register with the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). Requirements include being over 21 years old, holding a driving license for at least three years without any motoring convictions, and obtaining a new Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Register To Become A Driving Instructor

Take the Theory Test (ADI Part 1)

Cost of test: £81

Test Requirements: You must bring your UK photocard driving license to the test. For Northern Ireland licenses, bring both the photocard and paper counterpart.

Test Structure: The test comprises two parts:

  • Multiple-choice questions (scoring at least 80% in each of the five categories)
  • Hazard perception test (scoring at least 76%)

Car Requirements: Your vehicle must comply with DVSA standards; otherwise, the test will be canceled.

Test Components: The test lasts about an hour and includes:

  • Eyesight check
  • 'Show me, tell me' vehicle safety questions
  • General driving ability
  • Manoeuvres
  • Independent driving

Passing Criteria: You must record no more than six driving faults with no serious or dangerous faults.

Take the Driving Ability Test (ADI Part 2) Cost of test: £111 Car Requirements: Your vehicle must comply with DVSA standards; otherwise, the test will be canceled. Test Components: The test lasts about an hour and includes: Eyesight check 'Show me, tell me' vehicle safety questions General driving ability Manoeuvres Independent driving Passing Criteria: You must record no more than six driving faults with no serious or dangerous faults.
